My skin shone like caramel in the summer sun as I played in the garden outside our home in Sri Lanka. ![]() What I was running away from was certain. I propped the note on my pillow, whispered a breathless goodbye, and was gone. I took one last look over the room that had been my refuge. I pray and hope you find His mercy and forgiveness. I wrote with trembling hands in those final, desperate moments, inches before sneaking from my bedroom to the front door and out into the unknown: It was the only way I could escape the penalty, not for any crime I’d committed but for what I believed. I had to get out of there now to survive. Dad had cut his trip short and was on his way home. The cover of early morning darkness was fast slipping away. ![]()
